Open Letter to my Students

image from teacherquotes

Last week, I announced to several classes that this would be my final year teaching at LFC. Yes, after a mere 6 years of teaching, I will be resigning in May. However, I do not want any of you to think, nor entertain the thought, that I am resigning because of you, my students.

You honestly are the reason that I, and many other teachers, joyfully show up daily. Your energy fills me with even greater energy. Your desire to challenge yourselves with language learning is truly wonderful and constantly reminds me that nothing is too great for our amazing brains. Your desire to make a difference in this world, no matter how small or great, inspires me profoundly. It is the only world we have, and if we can take care of it and love each other, we can live on it longer.

Finally, because you show up, I always want to be the best teacher I can be. Many educators agree that teaching is not just a job. It truly is a dedication and investment in fostering relationships, challenging you beyond the classroom walls, truly believing in you and your potential, and so much more.

Besides Spanish, I hope you take three more things with you this year: diversity, tolerance and gratitude.  Diversity because it makes us all better. Tolerance because it is through understanding and respect of others' cultures, ideas, opinions and attitudes that we learn to coexist and keep peace. And gratitude, because it is through our daily doses of gratitude that we find great happiness.

Please know that I will definitely be 100% present with you and for you until the end of the school year.  I am quitting LFC, not you. I care about each of you greatly, and as my former students did, you also fill my heart with immense joy.

Los quiero mucho, chiquitos.
Sra. T

  40. I don't think anyone of us percieved that you are qutting because you are exasperated with us. On the contrary you are impossibly patient with us- more so than any other teacher. Lowery owes you a great deal of gratitude for thoroughly igniting excitement to learn in us! You have so many gifts, words, and love to offer the world. And now it needs you elsewhere more than it needs you here and we accept that! You change the course of the day, everyday, for hundreds of kids. Never doubt that you don't.... <3, Caroline G

  54. Thanks so much for teaching us this year! You're one of the few teachers who realizes that the method in which information is taught is as important, if not more important, than the information itself. 63. Mrs. Thompson, you are truly the best language teacher I could have asked for. When I was first going into Spanish two I was nervous because the pressure of being a native speaker, but you have taught me that everyone makes mistakes. If I continue down the road that you have shown me then hopefully I will be going into Native's Spanish in sophomore year. As well as building my confidence in my first language, you have also improved my speaking skills. I now notice that my conversations with my relatives have become more fast and flowy instead of the usual one worded answers. Your patients made you an amazing teacher and your kindness makes you an amazing person. Thank you for everything you've done for me and will do for me this year.
